We have been getting a lot of calls about vomiting and diarrhea. You may have an idea of what to expect when you get the stomach virus, but feel overwhelmed or unsure of what to expect if your infant or child is having GI symptoms.
There are many different types of viruses and some bacteria that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Stomach viruses strike fast and can cause some very disconcerting symptoms. The one saving grace of most stomach bugs is that symptoms usually disappear as quickly as symptoms started. On average vomiting lasts between 24-48 hours. Diarrhea lasts longer with an average span of 3-6 days, however, for some children diarrhea can last much longer up to a full 2-3 weeks.
Unfortunately, there is no medication we usually prescribe to help with stomach viruses. There is a group of medications called anti-emetics that help with vomiting. These medications are not usually prescribed in an outpatient setting and can cause some dangerous side effects in young children. Sometimes if vomiting or diarrhea is severe, infants or children may need to receive fluids through an IV, which is done in a hospital setting.
