CENTER CITY PEDIATRICS AWARDED “PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR”, PENNSYLVANIA LACTATION CONSULTANT’S HIGHEST AWARD
January 20, 2015, Philadelphia: The Pennsylvania Resource Organization for Lactation Consultants (PRO-LC) has chosen Dr. Rebecca Fischer and Center City Pediatrics to be the 2015 “Physician of the Year” practice for their “outstanding advocacy which supports, promotes, and protects breastfeeding.” Begun in 2008 by Dr. Eric Berger, Center City Pediatrics boasts 6 additional outstanding physicians: Dr. Reza Mandani, Dr. Cynthia Warren, Dr. Lindsay Frost, Dr. Liz Robinson, Dr. Grace Lee and Dr. Fischer. Center City Pediatrics is recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance [NCQA] as the highest level Patient-Centered Medical Home, a model of care promoting quality and wellness. The practice offers easy access to breastfeeding support by employing an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and offering a weekly Breastfeeding Support Group at the office. They also employ a Board Recognized Speech/Language Pathologist with a specialty in feeding and swallowing disorders.
Nominated by Linda Derbyshire IBCLC, Dr. “Becky” Fischer joined Center City Pediatrics after her residency at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Fischer is described as “always going above and beyond in helping breastfeeding families find solutions to their individual problems” in order to meet their personal goals. She is constantly pursuing excellence, especially in working with families affected with tongue tethering, the newer term for “tongue tie”. Being the proud mother of a breastfed baby, Dr. Fischer shares her experiences with her patients establishing that personal connection that family’s desire. Dr. Fischer and her colleagues work together to utilize current evidence-based knowledge to support breastfeeding and improve the health outcomes of their patients. Recent research links lower rates of diabetes, obesity, and respiratory disease with exclusive breastfeeding for six months. Perhaps Dr. Fischer and her fellow physician’s greatest contribution is their ability to normalize breastfeeding among their patients, while showing respect for every family’s choices.
Dr. Fischer frequently refers her patients to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for additional breastfeeding support. IBCLC’s are considered the Gold Standard in lactation and Dr. Fischer sees them as a vital part of the healthcare team.
The Pennsylvania Resource Organization for Lactation Consultants will present the award to Dr. Fischer and Center City Pediatrics on Monday, January 26th at their Chapter meeting in the Giant Event Center in Willow Grove, PA at 0930. All are welcome to attend. For more information, contact cindygriffis@catholichealth.net.
